Planned Parenthood is a nonprofit organization that helps educate woman about their healthy. Planned Parenthood is able to be a trusted health care provider, educator and advocate on behalf of woman. Worth (2014) says, “Advocacy is the basic right of every individual in the United States” (pg. 375). They are an invaluable resource to so many woman across the country. They not only provide woman with information to lead informed lives but they provide woman with contraception, testing, treatment and options about unintended pregnancies. Planned Parenthood’s mission is as stated, “Planned Parenthood believes in the fundamental right of each individual, throughout the world, to manage his or her fertility, regardless of the individual’s income, marital status, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, age, national origin, or residence”. According to Worth (2014), “mission is everything to a nonprofit organization—it is the reason the organization exists, and it must be the starting point for its planning” (pg. 164).
Recently Planned Parenthood has been in the news because of some of their health care services they provide. There has been action to shut down Planned Parenthood as a whole and take away necessary and important health care programs for woman. Politicians have decided that they should have a say in what is what is right and wrong when it comes to woman’s health.
As the public we need to protect Planned Parenthood and protect woman’s health. We especially need to protect woman’s right to abortion and contraception. The first issues, abortion, is more than a yes or no conversation. It is a conversation that needs to be allowed to have when a woman is in the situation Worth (2014) says, nonprofit organizations have played an essential role by bringing issues to the public’s attention, influencing attitudes, and building support for change”(pg. 365). A woman needs to be able to make a decision without fear of judgement, infection or even death. Woman need to know they have options and need to choose what is going to be best for them and that is what Planned Parenthood does. They are there for woman regardless, no judgement, just understanding and helpful discussions.
The other issue is contraception. Lawmakers, mostly men, have a large opinion on contraception. They raise the question that birth control is not planning ahead, it is playing God. They also say that birth control is deadly and is not the God’s way. There is a lot of controversy about how birth control should be free, or at least affordable. Planned Parenthood believes that there are many methods of birth control, be it abstinence, birth control bill or and IUD.
So how can we help? We can volunteer. We can stand up and let Congress know that we need access to birth control, cancer screenings, and STD tests. Worth (2014) says, “although many nonprofits employ significant numbers of paid staff, they are rooted in the tradition of voluntarism” (pg. 57). Volunteers can have the largest impact on how people view an organization, for good or bad. If we can’t volunteer, we can donate. These donations allow people who can’t afford to access the birth control, cancer screens, STD tests and treatments.
